The National Library, Valletta, Malta

Site Details:
The National Library dates from 1796 and houses a collection comprising thousands of documents, manuscripts, newspapers, journals, books and engravings, the majority of which are priceless in terms of their historical and cultural value. However, the building had never been equipped with a fire detection system and had no means of raising the alarm in the event of a fire.

Technical Details:
A detection and alarm system based on XP95 smoke and beam detectors was designed to cover all parts of the building. Halls housing contents deemed to be particularly valuable or historically irreplaceable were identified and an aspiration system, monitored by a XP95 Switch Monitor Plus, was specified for early response in these areas. In the event of an alarm a number of supression systems, controlled by XP95 Input/Output Units, can be triggered in a staged sequence.
