Overview

With over 180 years of brewing heritage, the McMullen Brewery based in Hertfordshire has 127 ‘locals’ in its portfolio.

Pubs offer a special set of challenges for successful fire protection, namely the different environments (kitchen, living space, cellar and public areas) and some have architecture of local historic importance that requires careful presentation.

Expert installers and Apollo partner PHF Fire were brought in as part of an extensive refurbishment programme across the pub collection.

The Solution

The Apollo XPander range of wireless intelligent fire detectors were chosen as the ideal solution for use in the pub buildings where electrical wiring installations can be difficult or unsuitable.

Some 25-30 XPander devices were installed in each pub, with some also integrating a wired system in the upstairs living area. Each wireless device communicates with the Apollo addressable loop via radio signals. Kentec panels were installed to recognise every device address, just like any wired system.

The Verdict

Sam Faulkner, Maintenance & Small Works Manager at PHF Fire explains:

"We had no hesitation in recommending the Apollo XPander devices for the McMullen pubs; we believe it is the best wireless system available. As our working time was limited to mornings only, before the pubs opened at midday, a wireless system was the perfect choice as it minimised disruption, mess and noise. We were proud to leave each pub with the latest, neatest, wire-free fire protection system that complies with the most rigorous fire regulations."
